Remember: You are a good person. You do not deserve to be beaten or abused. Nobody has the legal right to hurt you. You have the legal right to be free of abuse. You can learn to take care of yourself.
Introduction
It is our belief that the prevalence of male violence against women needs to be acknowledged. It is our belief that a patriarchal society condones the unequal treatment of men and women. We also see a direct link between patriarchy, racism, classism and homophobia.
This booklet contains checklists and charts to help identify abuse in intimate relationships. An intimate relationship can include dating, common-law, legally married and same sex couples. Although we recognize that abuse can and does occur in some lesbian relationships, for the purpose of this book, we have referred to abusive partners as being male.
Included in this booklet is information on safety, legal issues, and resources for an abused woman and those trying to help her.
An abused woman needs support, encouragement and needs to be made aware of resources so that she can make informed decisions.
